BA (Hons) Theology
The BA Honours degree programme forms the first part of The Main Course here at WEST. It may be undertaken either on a full-time or part-time basis. Full-time students take 3 years to complete the programme. Part-time students can take up to 10 years to complete.
The programme is divided into 3 stages, which are referred to as Levels 4, 5 and 6 in keeping with the National Qualifications Framework.
The programme can be pursued in either of two modes: Campus-Based Learning or Distance Learning. Either mode is available for both full-time and part-time students.
The Distance Learning option is ideal for those who are unable to attend classes on Campus.
More information on the BA (Hons) Theology by Distance Learning.
As with other degree-programmes at WEST students are encouraged to interact with a wide range of scholarship in their studies for the BA while always seeking to maintain biblical faithfulness and practical usefulness.
Entry requirements
Prospective students should have the equivalent of two ‘A’ levels along with passes in three other subjects at GCSE. Other qualifications and experience which demonstrate a candidate’s suitability will also be acceptable.
Awards
At the end of level 4
Having successfully completed 120 credits (typically 12 modules) – a student will receive the Certificate of Higher Education in Theology.
At the end of level 5
Having successfully completed a further 120 credits – a student will receive the Diploma in Higher Education in Theology.
At the end of level 6
Having successfully completed another 120 credits – a student will be awarded the BA (Hons) in Theology.
If you are not aiming to gain a university qualification then the programme is even more flexible as you will not be bound by the usual rules about progression from one level to the next. You would, of course, participate in the life of the School and get the same quality of instruction as the BA students. At the conclusion of your studies you will receive a statement from WEST detailing which modules you have studied.
BA (Hons) Theology modules
The BA provides a balance of training across the three ‘strands’ of Biblical Studies, Doctrinal and Historical Studies, and Applied Studies. The three levels follow a rigorous, comprehensive and logical developmental path.

Within the BA programme, modules may be studied selectively to follow a Missions Track or Women’s Studies and Ministry track.
Assessments
Assessments are double-marked by lecturers at WEST. In addition, in order to maintain standards, as well as comparability with other university degree programmes, there are two external examiners appointed by the University of Wales, Lampeter who moderate all our BA students’ assessments.
All the modules are written, taught, revised and marked by WEST lecturers and validated by the University of Wales, Lampeter.
Choice when studying at WEST
Students have a choice between pursuing studies which are not externally accredited or a degree course devised by the School but accredited by the University.
There is no compulsion from WEST for any student to follow a degree course; the choice belongs entirely to the student. The School recognises that a degree is not an essential requirement for the Lord’s work although it can be helpful in many ways. It is also recognised that for some students, non-accredited studies may be a more appropriate option.
Being a non-accredited student offers a large flexibility. Students are indeed not obliged to write essays nor take exams, they are welcome to if they wish to do so but this is not compulsory. They can also “pick and choose” modules from the different levels at the same time. This means that they benefit from the same quality of teaching than on a degree course but do not have to follow the University’s regulations.
Available start dates
Start dates are normally at the start of Semester 1 (September) but occasionally can be at the start of Semester 2 (February) if on a part-time basis.
