Dr Roger Abbott, Visiting Lecturer

BA Theol (Hons), ALBC, PhD
Born and raised in Cornwall, Roger gained his undergraduate training and degree in theology at the, now, London School of Theology (1971-75). He went on to develop extensive pastoral experience via a West Country rural context, and then an East Midlands urban church-planting and development ministry, from 1976 - 2006. He was recently successful in gaining a PhD, under the supervision of Dr Eryl Davies, pursuing ground-breaking research for an evangelical practical theology of disaster response for the Christian community in the UK. His interest in this field was spawned by his response to a major air disaster in 1989, and continued through his work on the Human Aspects Group of the Emergency Planning Society between 1994 and 2006. He has also lectured on Trauma Response at the London Theological Seminary (1992-2006). His experience of many traumatic situations in routine pastoral ministry supplements his particular specialty in major trauma work. He has also been an active attendee of the Kirby Laing Institute for Christian Ethics research seminar group, and of the Tyndale Fellowship, Cambridge. His vision for the evangelical church is to see a deeper and more extensive involvement of Christian Pastoral Carers in the profoundly traumatic messiness of real life through the discipline of Practical Theology. Roger is married to Marion, and they have five children, four grown up, and one still keeping them young!
