Overview of Level 4 Modules

TH4801 Introduction to Biblical Theology

This module introduces the discipline of biblical theology and considers briefly the contributions made by key figures. A number of themes are examined that illustrate the contribution that biblical theology can make to the theological quest, such as creation and fall, the Abrahamic covenant, the election and call of Israel, David’s kingdom and God’s kingdom, Solomon and Israel’s failure, the prophetic response, the promise of a new covenant, the promise of a new temple, the blessing of the nations, the ministry of Jesus, Jesus’ death and resurrection, the restoration of Israel, the fulfilment of the promises and mission.

TH4802 Reading Skills for Exegesis

This module is a practical introduction to some key skills for biblical exegesis and is a core module for those not taking both Hebrew Grammar nor Greek Grammar.

TH4803 Hebrew Grammar I & TH4808 Hebrew Grammar II

These modules aim to give the student a foundational knowledge of biblical Hebrew grammar in order to enhance study of the biblical text by being equipped to read it in its original language. They are designed to be taken together and are also available at Level 5. This provision gives the student flexibility and opportunity in acquiring biblical languages.

TH4804 Greek Grammar I & TH4809 Greek Grammar II

Knowledge of the Greek of the New Testament period will help students to evaluate the bewildering variety of translations of the Bible into English, it will enable them to use the best Greek-based reference works and commentaries and it will equip them to engage in detailed exegesis of the New Testament in its original language. These two modules are designed to be taken together and are also available at Level 5. This provision gives the student flexibility and opportunity in acquiring biblical languages.

TH4805 Introduction to Systematic Theology

This module lays a foundation for students by providing them with key definitions, a systematized framework, and gradual exposure to less familiar doctrinal traditions. The module will give students increased confidence as they tackle related biblical, doctrinal and historical modules later in the course.

TH4806 Women in Church and Mission

This module provides an overview of the role of women in church and mission. The subject is considered from biblical, historical and contemporary viewpoints exploring the topic on both a theoretical and practical basis.

TH4807 Religion and Culture

This module focuses on the concepts of religion and culture. It introduces the complexities of definitions and the relationship of the two terms. The concept of worldview is introduced and the way this is expressed in particular religious and cultural settings is explored. Other factors that influence religion and culture such as geography and economics are discussed. Presuppositions in the study of religions are also analyzed at a basic level. In the workshops ethnography is introduced as a valuable research method for learning about other cultures and religions. Students use this method to undertake fieldwork on a community outside their field of experience.

TH4810 Philippians

This module presents an opportunity to engage with the full text of a NT book. Many students embarking on a preaching/teaching ministry find this a useful module to teach them more of what it means to exegete Scripture.

TH4811 God and Humanity

This module builds on the foundation provided by Introduction to Systematic Theology and focuses on the most basic and strategic area of Christian theology. Consideration is given in the module to arguments for the existence of God, the revelation of God, the being of God, His attributes, his eternal decree, the doctrine of the Trinity but also the doctrine of sin, its nature and transmission and its effect on social conduct and the environment.

TH4813 Youth and Children’s Ministry

This module provides an opportunity for students to reflect on aspects of ministry among children and young people within the local church. The module explores the topic on both a theoretical and practical basis.

TH4814 Ministry Placement I

Ministry Placement relates academic study to the practicalities of contemporary pastoral ministry and missionary service. The student works alongside, and gains from, the experience of Christian leaders.

TH4815 Pneumatology

This module introduces a variety of approaches to the person of the Holy Spirit and his work, including the Holy Spirit in the context of Trinitarian theology, the Holy Spirit and the application of redemption, the Holy Spirit in rleation to the church and the world, and significant recent perspectives on the work of the Holy Spirit, with special references to the charismatic movement.

TH4816 Introduction to Pastoral Theology 

This module provides an introduction to the work of pastoral ministry. Biblical modles of pastoral ministry are examined as well as the way these models have been worked out in the history of the church and in contemporary church life.

TH4817 Preaching I 

This module provides an introduction to basic preaching skills in order to facilitate biblically faithful and effective communication and to encourage the exercise of preaching gifts. The importance of exegetical accuracy and doctrinal substance is emphasised, while questions of structure, illustration, application and delivery are fully explored.

TH4818 Introduction to the Philosophy of Religion

This module will introduce students to the use of philosophical reasoning in thinking about religion. Students will gain some knowledge and understanding of key philosophical debates about such issues as the rationality of theism, the existence of God and the challenges to faith from the existence of evil, scientific theory and the postmodern critique of metanarratives. Students will have the opportunity to tackle both classical and contemporary philosophical texts.
